The 1928 7.1 litre 36/220, developed from the 1927 type S, enjoyed considerable success in competitions, handled by leading drivers of the day. The Mercedes were large, heavy and always impressive with their screaming superchargers, brought into operation only by full throttle.

The 1928 Mercedes-Benz 36/220 car, was produced following the merger of Daimler and Benz in 1926. Designed by Ferdinand Porsche, only 146 of the cars were built.

The (Y-10) 1928 Mercedes-Benz 36/220 was introduced in 1963 when it replaced the earlier Mercedes Grand Prix racer.

Variations/Rarities: It was always white in the core range with either red or black seats and tan dashboard with silver plated radiator, headlights, windscreen frame and exhaust pipes.
The white car has a folded hood as part of the seat unit which is red or black.
The other variation is either single or twin spare wheels on the boot. The models with one spare tyre are probably the easiest to find.
Early issues had giftware mounting holes in the baseplate that were later filled in.

Models with black seats are very rare indeed and very valuable as a result.

It was also produced in the giftware range plated in both silver and gold.

The Mercedes 36/220 also belonged to the five petroleum promotional-models, which in 1966 were also packed in special red window boxes for the Mobil company.

Note: The maker name was incorrectly shown on the base of the model as MERCEDES BENZ rather than MERCEDES-BENZ.
